The Unión Nacional de Avicultores expresses concern about imports of egg that do not fulfill Mexican standards

  • Inappropriate import egg marketing practices continue.

  • César Quesada made a call to the mexican people to consume mexican egg, whose quality and freshness is guaranteed.

Mexico City, June 26, 2017. Mexican poultry industry expressed its concern about the inappropiate practice of trade that is being carried out through the import of egg produced in US.

César Quesada Macías, president of the Unión Nacional de Avicultores, explained that the imports of egg from US, unfotunately they are not complying with control of the cold network which the North American product must be subject.

The president of the Mexican poultry farmers, who will son met with the sanitary authorithies of COFEPRIS, to request promptly supervising this issue, and be fully fulfilled what is established in the Official Mexican standard NOM-159-SSA1-1996, goods and services. Egg, its products and derivatives. Sanitary provintions and specifications, he comitted that this practice affects the image of Mexican egg, which has the attribute of being a very fresh food and a lot of consumer aceptance.

He told that the egg importers does not complying with the process to keep the food under the refrigeration conditions that are required (in US, once the hen lays the egg, the egg is washed, waxed and kept refrigerated until consuption), since in Mexico, the egg is been placed in non-refrigerated places, outdoors, breaking down with the cold network to which it must be subjected.

This bad practice is afecting the Mexican egg image. Due to freshness conditions and fast displacement of the national market, the cuticle of the egg shell is not removed and it works as natural protection, thats why the refrigeration is not necessary to keep egg’s quality in optimal conditions.

In addition, this food has a very fast displacement in the national market, estimating that since is laid by the hen  to the moment it reaches the consumer may have passed near 2 o 3 days, no more.

“This is one of the great strenghts of the Mexican egg, it is a very fresh product and much appreciated for national consumers”, told Quesada.

Mexico is the consumer number one in the world, in this 2017, per capita consumption is expected to be 23.3kg, while the production will be about 2.8 million tons.

Jalisco produces the 55% of all Mexican egg, followed by puebla with 15% and Sonora with 8%.
